This research compares digital forensic approaches on the TikTok platform through web and smartphone environments using the Generic Computer Forensic Investigation Model (GCFIM). The study was conducted to support hoax investigations on social media through a systematic and legally accountable process consisting of the pre-process, acquisition and preservation, analysis, and presentation stages. Data acquisition and analysis were performed on Android smartphones and web browsers to obtain digital artifacts such as usernames, captions, videos, metadata, cache data, and user activity records. The results show that, in the web-based environment, Browser History Viewer achieved the highest recovery rate of 80%, followed by FTK Imager at 60%, while Browser History Examiner and Video Cache Viewer each achieved 40%. In the smartphone-based environment, Oxygen Forensic achieved a recovery rate of 40%, while MOBILedit Forensic achieved 20%. The findings also indicate that smartphone-based analysis provides more comprehensive application-level artifacts compared to web-based analysis. The implementation of GCFIM helped maintain evidence integrity and supported a structured investigation process. This research contributes a comparative evaluation of TikTok forensic investigations across mobile and web environments and is expected to serve as a reference for digital forensic practitioners and future cross-platform social media forensic investigations.
